Wardrobe Guide

Creating a portrait that you’ll treasure for years to come requires some outfit planning beforehand. Solid colors and simple, small prints are recommended. The goal is to not let the clothing distract from the people in the photograph.

Still, there’s nothing wrong with bringing a fun and funky secondary outfit – children have the personality to pull off just about anything!

When children and families are being photographed as a group, coordinating colors result in a more harmonious image. Solid colors in the same tonal range are best. I recommend one main color and up to two accent colors.

If you’re wondering about how everything goes together, I suggest laying each outfit out on the bed, and seeing what, if anything, pulls your eye from the ensemble as a whole – that piece of clothing will be what distracts in the portrait too.

Stripes, patterns, and high contrasting colors are not recommended. In addition, avoid big logos on shirts – unless you’re advertising for them!

Consider the accessories too: jewelry, scarves, hats…. they can really add some impact to your images.  The one piece of jewelry I suggest avoiding is watches – as they’re incredibly distracting – but if they’re an important part of your look or wardrobe, keep them and break the rules.

Also, think about what you want to do with these images: a session album or storybook, or perhaps some wall portraits? Do you need gifts for the family too? Having a vision for the type of images can help you visualize what you want to be wearing.

And if your child has a special something – be it a blanket, stuffed animal, or toy – feel free to bring it along to be in the photos.

For engagement and couple sessions, I recommend a single change of clothes for both of you (even if its just a different shirt) to add some variety.

For senior portraits & graduation sessions, multiple outfit changes (casual, formal, traditional & funky) are recommended.
