Newborn Girls

Alexis and Emily were tiny when they were born; just 5lbs 2 oz and 3lbs 12oz.  But every tiny bit of them is adored by big sister Isabella & Mommy & Daddy.

I came to their home when they were just 3 weeks old (and still tiny!) for their portrait session.  Both babies fed, started drifting off, and then got the hiccups! It was another 30 minutes and another feed, burp, and diaper change before they were calmed down and sleeping happily and ready to go.

But once they were ready, it was photo time!

Probably not.

I LOVE newborns, and after working as an instructor at The Art of Pregnancy & Newborn Photography (TAoPaN)’s workshop this past weekend, I’m committed to photographing more newborns more often!  I also just went prop shopping with newborns in mind and have some new goodies I really want to test out.

Introducing Max – 15 Days Old

Max William was a treat to photograph – he was a great sleeper, and even gave a couple little smiles!

Nicknamed “monkey” by his loving mommy & daddy, his room was done up like a little jungle, with monkey designs and decorations and bedding…. it was so cute! So of course when it came time to do a bit of the “prop” photos, I borrowed goodies right from his room!

Everything you see was photographed right in their living room – so no one had to leave the house – and I brought all the backdrops and lighting to make it just like a portrait studio… without the commute.

Love the images? Check out the full slideshow of images on the Carlson Photography Facebook Page (no account required).  Mommy watched it and said it made her cry…. that’s how much she loved it.

Tiny Little Princess

I spent Sunday afternoon with little Emma Elizabeth, just nine days old.

Emma fought her nap for most of my session with her, wanting to be awake to see what all this fuss was about.   But with a little bit of extra milk and some cuddle time with Mommy, we managed some lightning fast outfit and set changes while she slept, and accomplished a lot.

Emma was joined by her big brother Jackson, who I had previously photographed for his newborn session too!  Jackson is now a curious and energetic nearly-two-year old who helped me with my clamps and was very into seeing everything going on.  After all, he didn’t remember his own newborn session!

Baby Trent

IMG_0298

I spent about 4 hours today with little Trent and his family for his first photo session.  At a week and a half, Trent had some very strong opinions about what he wanted out of this session.  Okay, not really, he was mostly focused on not falling asleep and trying to keep me from pulling his pacifier out every time he did.  Yep, every time he started to fall asleep, his hands would end up covering the pacifier to try and protect it.   He didn’t succeed though, as we got all the beautiful classic baby shots that Mommy could possibly want!

I also got to see his beautiful big sisters.  At six, Samantha has the confidence to do anything.  She knows that she’s the best at everything she does, regardless of what it is.  She was so determined to be the best smiler, that she kept looking to Mommy for a ‘smile critique.’  Three year old Megan was so excited to have me there that she had trouble holding still.  In the end it was the promise of a Halloween cupcake that won out. Mommy’s going to have  a hard time making decisions at the proofing!

Baby Allie

img_6768Here’s Allie at two weeks; already interested in the world and asserting her independance by refusing to sleep at her regular time because pictures are going on.

As a result, we have some beautiful awake images of her with her family, and then later on some sleeping shots of the little princess all tired out.

And princess she was: every one of her siblings as well as Mommy and Daddy were jumping to her commands; loudly voiced demands for pacifiers and blankets and cuddles and reassurance. Oh yes, she is loved.

Thanks for the great session today everyone.

Here’s a quick sneak peak; lots more to come later this week!

And we’ll end today with the image Daddy called the “Titanic Image” – all that’s missing is the necklace

9 Days Old… Jackson Sneak Peak

Yawning newborn baby

This morning I went out to Diamond Bar to meet little Jackson and his parents Anthony and Heidi. Jackson is just nine days old (I keep getting that little “Peas Porridge” nursery rhyme in my head).

He’s as cute as they come, with a full head of hair that looks like Daddy’s. And he’s enjoying keeping Mommy & Daddy on their toes. But he’s also a good baby too – Mommy gets 6 hours of sleep some nights before he wakes her!  And he was great for our session too – once he ate his fill, he knocked out for about 45 minutes, and we got everything we needed to capture his first week out in the world.

One of the things I was looking forward to in this session was that we were going to be shooting black and white. I love black and white images, but most of the time my clients prefer I shoot in color. However, Anthony knew that they wanted a certain look for their son’s first portraits: classic naked baby “like he came into the world” on a black background, and in black and white.  I did, however, slip in a few color shots, like this one, just because I liked it :)

So here’s a quick sneak peak for Mommy and Daddy. Good job Jackson, and I hope to see you again in a few months!

Carter & Hudson

proof-011Today I went to Hudson’s home to photograph his new baby brother. Carter is just three weeks old, and Hudson couldn’t be prouder to be a big brother. When I got there, Hudson was thrilled to see me. He had his own toy camera (I’ve got to get one of those) and was showing me how he takes pictures. He wanted to know what all the different equipment pieces I’d brought were for… and when I showed him my umbrellas for the lights, he went into the hall closet to show me that he, too, had umbrellas.

Carter spent most of the session awake, though towards the end we managed to get him to fall asleep for about fifteen minutes – a very prodctive15 minutes though, as some of my favorite images are of him wrapped in his special blanket, just sleeping peacefully.

So Hudson, Carter, and family, enjoy your preview, and I enjoyed visiting you for pictures!
