Graduated!

Amber just graduated from UCLA, and her mom wanted to commemorate the occasion with photos.

It was time to replace the senior in high school portrait on the mantel with something new… so what could be more California than beach portraits to celebrate?!!!

Beautiful at the Beach

These beautiful images are from my goddaughter’s session with me at the end of July.

She was so excited to wear the new dress we bought and she’s been begging to wear the mermaid outfit since I bought it last October.

I say “was” because the moment we arrived, everything changed. You’d have thought I dragged her to the doctor for shots and the dentist for a root canal all rolled into one.

She no longer wanted to do pictures… why? Because she “didn’t want to.”

This after planning outfits and the session, driving there, doing her hair, and getting everything ready…  So what to do?

I begged.

I pleaded.

I bribed.

I threatened.

She whined.

She pouted.

She sobbed.

She sulked.

And somehow, in the midst of frustration on both ends… we got these images.

There was giggles.

And laughter.

And dancing.

And fun.

Engaged

Way back at the end of May I photographed Dan & Angelica’s engagement pictures at the beach, and just now realized I never blogged them!

Which is horrible, as I loved their images.

However, as we’ve just completed their Wedding Guestbook/Photo Album from the session this means I can blog some of the design pages too, so it all works out!

Dan & Angelica are getting married in Hawaii this September.  Luckies!

Also, Click on over to the Carlson Photography Facebook Page to see their session slideshow!

Crazy in Love

I just delivered Sarah and Kelly their engagement photos a few days ago – they’re getting married in September and wanted some beach portraits together before the big day… Sarah’s goal was candids of them interacting, getting a bit wet, and having a good time – I don’t think she realized just how wet we all were going to get though!

What I love about their images is that we captured authentic moments between them, and these moments are full of storytelling.  I feel like we caught moments of a movie, that each image has a story behind it – and it’s their story!

At the Beach

Just delivered this lovely family their beach photos from last month – we spent time at their ordering session designing a wall around their favorite images with a lovely set of frames Mom had just been waiting to updated.   Then we put together two collages, picked out a few special ones for grandma… and when I went by to deliver the prints yesterday I saw Mom had already gotten all her proofs into a slip in album to show off every image!

Little Andrew was a delight to photograph. From the moment he stepped out of the car we connected like longtime buddies.  And with his great sense of humor, the sweet expressions just came pouring out of him…. I can’t wait for our next session!

At the Beach

I met up again with Jana and Joel, this time at the beach for family pictures!

The day was a bit overcast and just a tad chilly, but everyone was ready to have some fun regardless.

Jana was a bit uncertain at first, but with the tide way out, there was plenty of places to explore, pools to poke toes into, and big sticks to dig with.

Joel liked Mommy more than the beach, but once he discovered the sand, he wondered if it tasted good… and then, it was time to have Mommy or Daddy help him balance (and stay out of those pools!) while he explored this new place!

We didn’t get a sunset this evening… but we did get to see dolphins! We took a quick break between poses to watch them leap and splash… and then went right back to having fun in the sand!

The Beach in October

IMG_0058_webFirst beach session of October this evening, and I got to photograph my goddaughter!

It was chillier than its been, with some wind, and haze.  Which means that the wonderful California beach season is on its way out. I highly recommend that if you’re thinking of going to the beach for Christmas pictures that you don’t wait: schedule now, because it only gets colder and windier.

IMG_0069BW_webYou might think that with Giana being my goddaughter and photographed constantly from birth, we’d have a “piece of cake” session. Well, she’s also two, not too sure about this sand that isn’t the sand in her school sandbox… and as for the waves, we’ll they’re loud!  It took a bit of coaxing to get her comfortable enough to not be clinging to someone, then a bit more for Mommy to be able to step a foot away so I could take pictures of Giana all by herself.  But little by little we warmed her up, and got her running, laughing, and jumping.

Still, she was glad to put her sweatshirt back on and head to the car for her watermelon lollipop when we were all done. It’s tiring being cute!

Top Secret Cousins Session

img_7983_5x7Back at the end of August, I met up with Demi & Alexis, Eleni & Kostas, and Dino and Marrianna at the beach for some cousins photos.  The session was a secret surprise for their granparents as an anniversary gift.  But now that the occasion has passed and the secret is out, I can share some of the images.

The neat thing about this set of cousins was that not only were they highly energetic and a lot of fun, but they were all older, allowing me to really tap their energetic side and do some ‘big kid’ things like group jumps.

Beach Session Slideshow

I just wanted to share Nicholas and Emily’s family slideshow from their beach session. We had a ton of fun, and captured some amazing moments. Their family room wall is going to look amazing!

At the Beach

img_7366_webRemember Nicholas from the National Charity Model Search? He received the most votes of all the models competing from Carlson Photography. As a result, he won a free photo session for his family, and they used it this past weekend.

It was great getting to see him and his little sister Emily again. Nicholas is about to enter kindergarten now, and full of energy.  When I last saw Emily, she was barely standing, but now she’s full speed ahead running, and not afraid of anything – not even crashing waves.
img_7204

It was a good thing she had Nicholas around, as well as Daddy, as she never flinched at the incoming tide… but with both of them to look after her, she was as safe as could be.

We started with some formal posed images of the family, then progressed to just having fun!  We let the kids run about, get their toes (and sometimes more!) wet, and dug in the sand. By the time the session was over everyone was wet, sandy, and tired.  Time to get the promised lollipop and head home….
